Choosing a Shredder for your Home Office

Having a shredder in your office at home is absolutely essential. You need to make sure that all of your personal documents are disposed of in the correct manner and that your personal information such as full name, address, even your date of birth are completely destroyed.

Without making sure that your personal information is completely destroyed, you are at risk of identity theft. This can be absolutely devastating. Not only do you run the risk of fraudsters taking out loans and credit cards in your name, but you could potentially face complete financial ruin.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to completely destroy all of your personal documents and that is to invest in a high quality shredder. However, if you work from home, then one of the features that you are definitely going to need to think about carefully is the noise levels of any shredder that you buy.

The last thing that you want is to be disturbed by the noise that the shredder makes whilst it is in use. In order to help you make an informed buying decision, we have put together our top 3 quietest shredders. We hope that our review will help you make the right choice for you.

3. Rexel Promax RSX1035 2100884A 10 Sheet Manual Cross Cut Shredder

Upon taking the shredder out of the box, the first thing that we noticed was that the assembly didn’t take very long at all. Within minutes we were up and ready to go. Starting off, we decided to try one sheet and as expected, it was shredded in a flash.

We then tried the maximum sheets which is 10 A4 pages for this one to see how it would fare. We are happy to report that within seconds again, all of the sheets were completely destroyed and no personal information at all was visible. This is exactly what you want with a shredder like this.

Now, onto the important thing; the noise level. We were really happy about the noise level with this one. As you’d expect, it’s not going to be silent. However, the noise was really low compared to some of the other models that we have reviewed in the past. If you are looking for a shredder with low noise level that is cost effective as well as efficient, then you can’t really go wrong with this one. The only complaint we have is that the cool down period is quite long.

Features:

  • 35L Waste Paper Bin
  • Cross Cut Blades
  • 10 Sheet Shredding
  • Shreds CDs
  • Shreds Credit Cards
  • 15 minute Continuous Run Time
  • 8 minute Cool Down
  • Auto Reverse Function
  • 230-250v

2. Fellowes Powershred 79Ci 16 Sheet Cross Cut Paper Shredder

Number 2 on our list is this great shredder from Fellowes. Their Powershred range has been reviewed by us before and we have never been disappointed with their shredders and we weren’t disappointed with this one either. As always with Fellowes, assembly with this shredder was very straightforward and we were ready to shred in minutes.

The first thing that really impressed us with this shredder is the fact that it can shred up to 16 sheets of A4 paper at one time. This is quite a large amount in comparison to most of the other shredders on the market in this price range. As we expected, the shredder itself feels very well built and durable, which is always a good sign.

We were a little worried about the noise levels with this one. We suspected that given it has a lot more power that it would produce large amounts of noise, making it unsuitable for the home office where work needs to be completed. However, this really wasn’t the case. We were actually really pleased with how quiet the machine was.

If you are looking for a mid-range shredder for the home office, then this one is perfect.

Features:

  • 23L Waste Paper Bin
  • Cross Cut Blades
  • 16 Sheet Shredding
  • Shreds CDs
  • Shreds Credit Cards
  • 20 Minutes Continuous Use
  • 30 Minute Cool Down
  • Auto Reverse Function

1.     Bonsaii EverShred C149-C 18-Sheet Paper Shredder

Number 1 on our list has to go to this shredder from Bonsaii. We love how modern it feels and how well it performs. Upon setting it up, we were ready to use it within a couple of minutes. The maximum sheets you can shred at any one time with this one is 18 which makes this perfect for using it in an office as well as the home.

There were no issues when we used the maximum sheets and we also tried the CD and credit card function and these were easily shredded too. We thought that the plastics and staples would create a large amount of noise but this really wasn’t the case with this one.

It was relatively quiet, even when we shredded the plastic, which makes this shredder perfect for use in the workplace. If you are looking for a fairly affordable shredder that is durable enough to handle daily usage then this is definitely it.

Features:

  • 23L Waste Paper Bin
  • Cross Cutting Blades
  • 18 Sheets Shredding
  • Shreds CDs
  • Shreds Credit Cards
  • 60 Minutes Continuous Use
  • Auto Reverse Function

Fellowes Powershred H-6C Shredder Review – 2017 – 2018

When it comes to personal documents such as bank statements, mortgage statements and credit card bills, it is very important that you dispose of them properly. The last thing that you want is for them to get into the wrong hands.

What many people don’t realise is just how easy it is for a criminal to commit identity fraud. They can take out loans and credit cards in your name and so much worse. The end result is a lot of stress for you an potential financial disaster.

The only way that you can avoid this from happening to you is to make sure that all personal documents are gotten rid of completely. This doesn’t mean simply throwing them away, because this is how they will get into the wrong hands. Instead, you should shred them.

There are plenty of different shredders out there, so shopping around is important. It is also a very good idea to read customer reviews for any shredder that you are interested in. To get you started, we have tried and tested the Fellowes Powershred H-6C 6 Sheet Cross Cut Personal Shredder With Safety Lock and reviewed it for you.

Pros:

  • It has a very large 32L waste bin capacity which is particularly impressive for a budget model.
  • It is relatively quiet for a shredder of this power.
  • It has an automatic thermal cut out to stop it from overheating.
  • The cooling down period is fairly quick.
  • It doesn’t overheat quickly so you get quite a lot of continuous use out of it before it shuts off.

Cons:

  • Ideally, it needs to be oiled frequently, even right out of the box.
  • Not well suited to large loads of paper.

Our Review

As we have already mentioned in the above pros and cons, in order to get the best results, you will need to oil the shredder straight out of the box. This will stop the teeth from jamming and prevent you from running into any problems during the shredding process. The shredder itself is very simple to put together and we had it up and running within a few minutes.

We tried the maximum sheets first which is 6 A4 pages. Surprisingly, for such a budget shredder, they went through the blades very quickly and were completely destroyed within a matter of seconds. We suspect that the extra oil helped with the speed of the shredding, but even so, it was still very impressive.

The controls themselves couldn’t be more straightforward, so you won’t have any trouble trying to figure the machine out. We liked the fact that we got a fair amount of continuous usage out of the machine. For a budget model, we expected it to perform quite poorly but this really wasn’t the case. The cooling down period was only around 10 minutes and the machine was ready for use again, which is a definite plus.

We have no complaints to make about the noise of the machine itself; it was very quiet indeed, especially for a machine with such power. It is also compact enough to fit neatly under a desk with ease, so it is ideal for use in the home office.

Overall, for a budget shredder that works really well, you can’t go wrong with this one. It is perfect for use in the home office by those who don’t have large volumes of paper to shred on a daily basis and won’t cost you the earth either.

Features:

  • 32L Waste Bin Capacity
  • Credit Card & Staple Shredding
  • 10 Minute Cool Down Period
  • Auto Shut Off
  • 6 Sheet Shredding Ability
  • 3 Minutes Continuous Use
  • Safety Lock

Fellowes Powershred DS-1 Shredder Review – 2017 – 2018

When it comes to equipment for your home office, there are a lot of things that you are going to need. Aside from the important items like your computer, landline telephone and printer, one thing that you are definitely going to need is a high quality shredder.

Documents that contain any personal information about you – your full name, home address, telephone number, even bank details – can be used to steal your identity. This can leave you in thousands of pounds worth of debt and completely destroy your life.

The good news is that by using a high-quality shredder, you are able to completely eliminate any risk of this happening to you. There are some great shredders out there that will allow you to completely destroy any personal information about you contained within your paperwork.

We decided to put several shredders to the test so that we could give you an honest review and allow you to make an informed decision on the right shredder for your home office. One of the models that we tested was the Fellowes Powershred. Here is our review.

Pros:

  • Handles up to 10 pages at a time so you can shred documents quickly.
  • The mesh basket allows you to see how much room you have left so you will know when to empty it without any guess work.
  • It feels like it has been very well built so it will last for years to come.
  • It has a safety cut out feature to eliminate the risk of accident and injury.

Cons:

  • It is quite big and bulky, so may not be suitable if you don’t have much room in your office.
  • It can be quite noisy when used for large volumes of paper.

Our Review

For a high-quality shredder for the home office, we really liked this one from Fellowes. Starting off, the shredder itself is packaged really well and is very easy to set up so that it is ready for use. All in all, the initial set up only took us around 5 to 10 minutes. The design of the shredder itself is really modern – something that we really liked.

It has a mesh waste paper bin which is a big advantage and something that we really liked. With the majority of shredders, you are not able to see how much of the waste bin has been filled up. The problem with this is that you have to either guess when it needs to be emptied or keep taking the lid off which is a pain when you are in the middle of working on something.

This mesh waste paper bin is great because it allows you to see exactly how much space you have left in the bin itself. You don’t have to mess around opening and closing the lid. The cross cutting blades are great because they are able to completely destroy any personal paperwork that you may have, making the information contained within them impossible to read. Controlling the shredder itself is very easy; the controls are incredibly user friendly.

One of the features that we really liked was the SafeSense feature. This automatically shuts off the shredder if your hands happen to get too close to the blades. This is also good if you have pets or children in the home who may go near the shredder.

Although this shredder is slightly on the pricey side, we have to say that we were really impressed. It copes very well with continuous use and has a really short cool down period. If you are running a business from your home office, then this shredder would be perfect for you.

Overall, we have to say that we highly recommend the Fellowes Powershred.

Features:

  • Cross Cut Cutting Style
  • 11 Sheet Cutting Capacity
  • Paper Width 230mm
  • 18L Waste Bin Capacity
  • Staple and Credit Card Cutting
  • 5 Minute Continuous Cutting

Swordfish 1200XXCD Shredder Review 2017 – 2018

Identity fraud and theft is a very real threat, especially these days where your information can be used online in seconds. This is why it is so important that you get rid of any personal documents in the correct way. By destroying them completely, you can make sure that you are not at risk of identity theft.

There are a number of ways that you can get rid of any personal documents, but by far the best thing that you can do is to shred them. In order to do this, you are going to need to invest in a high quality shredder. This is even more important if you work from your home office and have a lot of important documents to deal with.

Before you invest your money in a shredder, it is a good idea to consider all of your different options. There are some great models available at the moment. In order to give you a better idea of some of the options that are available, we have tested and reviewed the Swordfish 1200XXCD 12 Sheet Micro Cut High Security Paper/Document Shredder to give you a better idea of what to expect.

Pros:

  • Very large capacity waste bin so you can shred plenty before you need to empty it.
  • In terms of noise level, this shredder is relatively quiet compared to a lot of other models.
  • It is very good at handling continuous usage before it needs to shut down to cool down.
  • It is on wheels, so can very easily be placed under a desk and wheeled out when you need to use it.
  • Very easy to operate with little to no fuss.

Cons:

  • It is quite costly in comparison to some of the other models on the market.
  • Still has a little paper dust upon emptying the waste bin.

Our Review

Starting off, the shredder has been packaged very well. Assembly couldn’t have been easier and only took us a couple of minutes to get everything set up and ready to use. We tested it out with just one piece of paper to start off with. It was completely shredded by the cross cutting blades within seconds, which is just what you want.

After this, we tried the maximum number of A4 pages at one time, which is 12 sheets. Surprisingly, these were also shredded in a number of seconds. One of the things that we were really impressed with was how quiet this shredder was, even when we used the maximum sheets of paper. We expected it to be much noisier. This shredder won’t disturb anyone while it’s being used, that’s for sure.

The capacity of the waste paper bin was another feature that impressed us. We were able to fill at least two bin bags full of shredded paper once we were finished and had filled the bin up which is very impressive indeed. Another thing that we really like, and imagine that others will too, is that you are able to shred documents even with the staples still in them. This saves so much time having to remove them.

Finally, it is worth noting that this shredder does not give up easily. We have tested shredders in the past that have only been able to cope with continuous use for about 2 minutes before they have given up and shut down, taking at least 30 minutes to cool down.

This really wasn’t the case with this one. We were really pleased when we were able to get 20 minutes of continuous use out of the shredder before it needed to cool down. The cool down period was actually relatively short too, it only took around 10 minutes before we were able to use the shredder again.

Overall, the Swordfish 1200XXCD 12 Sheet Micro Cut High Security Paper/Document Shredder is a great option for the home office, particularly if you have large volumes of documents to shred on a daily or weekly basis. We definitely recommend it.

Features:

  • Cross Cutting Blades
  • 12 Sheet Cutting Capacity
  • 220mm Paper Entry Width
  • 26L Bin Capacity
  • 0mm Cut
  • 50dB Noise Level
  • Plastic Cutting
  • 2 Year Warranty

Texet CC612N 12L Cross Cut Shredder Review 2017 – 2018

Disposing of personal documents in the proper manner is essential. There are millions of cases of identity fraud every single year, caused purely by people simply throwing their personal information out with everyday rubbish.

There are a number of ways that you can get rid of your personal information on things like letters, bank statements and even bank cards, but the easiest and most efficient way is to use a shredder. It is simply a matter of placing your paperwork into the machine and letting it destroy the information for you.

Of course, it is important that you make sure that you are buying a high quality shredder. With this in mind, it is always a good idea to read a thorough review to make sure that you are getting good value for your money.

We tested out the Texet CC612N 12L Cross Cut Shredder so that we could give you an honest, non-biased review and here it is.

Pros:

  • It has a 12L waste box for collecting the shredded items which is big enough for quite a lot of paperwork.
  • It has a built in safety feature which will automatically switch off the shredder to prevent it from overheating and allow it to cool down.
  • It is basic so very easy to operate without too much fuss.
  • It can shred up to 6 pieces of paper at one time.

Cons:

  • It has a slow recovery time if it overheats and can take up to 30 minutes to cool down.
  • Only really suitable for small volumes of paperwork so wouldn’t be suitable for an office.

Our Review

If you are looking for a compact shredder for use at home, then the Texet CC612N 12L Cross Cut Shredder is a great option to consider. The first thing that we noticed was how small it was, in comparison to many of the other shredders available of this type.

We were able to easily fit it under the desk with no problem at all. One thing that you may find with some shredders is that they are quite heavy and hard to move around, but this wasn’t the case with this one. At just 3.6Kg it is actually relatively light.

The best thing for us about this particular shredder is the cross cutting capabilities that it has. This makes identity theft far less likely, because your documents are not only cut into strips but then cut across too, making reading important information impossible.

Another thing that we liked about the cutting capabilities is that the blades are also able to cut through debit and credit cards, so when you need to dispose of them you don’t have to worry about them falling into the wrong hands. Not many budget shredders like this one will have that capability, so this is a big plus for us.

When we tested out the shredder, we wanted to put it through its paces, so we started off by shredding the recommended maximum 6 documents at one time. We are pleased to report that it had no trouble shredding through them in seconds.

There are a couple of drawbacks that we noticed. To start with, there is the fact that you have to remove all staples before you can shred your documents. This isn’t a big issue, but it does add more time to your workload.

The only other issue that we had was the cool down period. The shredder has a built in feature where it will shut down if it starts to overheat. After 2 minutes of shredding it will usually do this. This isn’t a big problem, but it does take about 30 minutes to cool down properly once it has shut down.

Although there are these two little niggles to report on, it is important to remember that this is a budget shredder and one that is designed for day to day shredding at home. If you want something affordable that will allow you to shred important documents on a daily basis then you really can’t go wrong with the brilliant Texet CC612N 12L Cross Cut Shredder.

Features:

  • Cross Cutting Blades
  • 12L Waste Bin
  • Credit Card Shredding
  • 6 A4 Sheet Shredding Capacity
  • 2 Minutes On, 30 Minutes Off
  • Entry Width 220mm
  • 220-240v
